Seamus Ryan’s photographs of flowers and plants follow in the tradition of Edward Weston, Robert Mapplethorpe and Karl Blossfeldt. Ryan searches for form and character in the twists and folds of petals, stems and plant foliage – in effect creating a unique portrait of each specimen. In turn graceful, playful and even menacing, these contemporary studies present different aspects of the life of the natural world.
This photograph was taken with a 20 x 24″ polaroid camera and peel-apart film. To achieve this ‘transfer’ technique, Ryan peeled the image apart and placed the negative face-down onto matte drawing paper. The result is very painterly, appearing almost like a watercolour in parts. This work is unique and is sold as print only (unframed).
