Hiroshi Sugimoto first started photographing seascapes in 1980. Since then he has travelled all over the world documenting and photographing different seas and oceans, from the Adriatic to the Caribbean, the Black Sea, the Arctic, Japan and the Atlantic and Pacific. The images are meticulously composed, so that the sea and the sky have equal proportions, with the horizon always in the centre. Often using long exposures, Sugimoto thus creates painterly images where clouds and waves are blurred in a timeless meditation.
This is a tri-tone offset lithograph from an edition of 500, printed in 1991 by Kyoto Shoin Co., Japan for the occasion of a Sugimoto retrospective at IBM (Tokyo) and the Carnegie International (Pittsburgh). Each print is embossed with the name of the sea and the date on the recto. The print is book-mounted and sits in a beautiful white stained wood frame. Please allow 3 – 4 weeks for framing and shipping. Other works from Sugimoto are available, to see a wider selection please contact us: info@atlasgallery.com.
